Synaesthesia is a condition in which one type of stimulation evokes the sensation of another, as when the hearing of a sound produces photisms, i.e. mental percepts of colours. R is a 20 year old colour blind subject who, in addition to the relatively common grapheme-colour synaesthesia, presents a rarely reported cross modal perception in which a variety of visual stimuli elicit aura-like percepts of colour. In R, photisms seem to be closely related to the affective valence of stimuli and (...)

Responding to recent concerns about the reliability of the published literature in psychology and other disciplines, we formed the X-Phi Replicability Project to estimate the reproducibility of experimental philosophy. Drawing on a representative sample of 40 x-phi studies published between 2003 and 2015, we enlisted 20 research teams across 8 countries to conduct a high-quality replication of each study in order to compare the results to the original published findings. We found that x-phi studies – as represented in our sample (...)

Unfounded—conspiracy and health—beliefs about COVID-19 have accompanied the pandemic worldwide. Here, we examined cross-nationally the structure and correlates of these beliefs with an 8-item scale, using a multigroup confirmatory factor analysis. We obtained a two-factor model of unfounded (conspiracy and health) beliefs with good internal structure (average CFI = 0.98, RMSEA = 0.05, SRMR = 0.04), but a high correlation between the two factors (average latent factor correlation = 0.57). This model was replicable across 50 countries (total N = 13,579), (...)

This article contributes to debates on mobilising queer perspectives on beauty as tools against racism and gender-based violence in contexts ruled by whiteness-centring racial mixture (mestizaje) regimes. Drawing on queer, critical race, feminist and visual studies’ frameworks and multimodal methods, the article explores representations on Marrón/Marrona/Marrxn 1 (racialised ‘brown-skinned’, as the colour marrón in Argentina is used as a racial category similar to moreno – both meaning shades of ‘brown’ – in other Latin American countries) beauty in relation to intersectional (...)

  13. On the Semantic Argument for Logical Pluralism.Sabina Dominguez-Parrado - forthcoming - Erkenntnis.
According to a prominent argument, logical pluralism arises due to the ambiguity – or other semantic features – of natural language expressions such as 'valid' or 'follows from'. In this paper, I show that this argument is unsuccessful. First, I argue that there is no compelling linguistic evidence for the claim that 'valid' and its cognates are ambiguous. As a result, logical pluralism cannot arise from the ambiguity of these expressions. Second, I point out that semantic considerations are generally ill-suited (...)

As a result of recent corporate scandals, several rules have focused on the role played by Boards of Directors on the planning and monitoring of corporate codes of ethics. In theory, outside directors are in a better position than insiders to protect and further the interests of all stakeholders because of their experience and their sense of moral and legal obligations. Female directors also tend to be more sensitive to ethics according to several past studies which explain this affirmation by (...)

What Logical Contextualism Cannot Be.Sabina Dominguez-Parrado - forthcoming - Australasian Journal of Philosophy.
Logical contextualism is the view that ‘valid’ is a context-sensitive expression. An often-invoked motivation for this view is that, unlike traditional forms of logical pluralism, it appears to avoid the so-called collapse problem. In this paper, I argue for a twofold conclusion. First, I argue that the key tenets of logical contextualism require further development before the view can be fully assessed. Second, I argue that, even if we set this issue aside, logical contextualism rests on an untenable assumption: that (...)

This article reviews the enactive approach to perception, which defends the role of objects, the subject and the environment in the configuration of the phenomenal character of perception, that is, the qualitative dimension of experience. Initially the case of hallucination and its implications in the understanding of the phenomenal character of perception is retaken. Then, two positions within analytic philosophy of perception, representationalism and disjunctivism, are critically explored. Finally, enactivism is presented as a more promising alternative.

When the grief process lasts longer than 6 months, the person is in risk of developing Complicated Grief Disorder. The CGD is related to serious health consequences. To reduce the probability of developing CGD a preventive intervention could be applied. In developing countries like Mexico, the psychological services are scarce, self-applied interventions could provide support to solve this problem and reduce the health impact (...)

  20. The Psychology of Belonging: A Stratified Ontological Reconstruction of Psychological Theory under Dual Temporality and Imperfect Belonging.Carlos Federico Obregon Diaz - manuscript
This paper develops a systematic reconstruction of psychological theory grounded in the Philosophy of Belonging. It introduces a stratified ontology (SDBO–SDBEO–SDBEIO), dual temporality (synchronic structure and diachronic unfolding), and imperfect belonging as a constitutive condition of reality. -/- The central thesis is that the self is a diachronic trajectory of belonging rather than a pre-existing entity. Psychological phenomena are reinterpreted as relational processes, and pathology as the collapse or rigidification of belonging. -/- The paper proposes a six-step clinical architecture explaining (...)

  21. Artificial Intelligence, Emotions and Belonging.Carlos Federico Obregon Diaz - manuscript
This paper offers a philosophical analysis of artificial intelligence grounded in the Philosophy of Belonging. It argues that human intelligence is inseparable from emotions and biological evolution, and that belonging constitutes the ontological structure of human existence. From this perspective, AI lacks genuine subjectivity because it does not possess emotions, evolutionary history, or existential belonging. Against transhumanist and functionalist accounts, the paper defends a biologically grounded conception of emotions and shows that without them there can be neither belonging nor power (...)

  22. The Ontological Revolution of Belonging.Carlos Federico Obregon Diaz - manuscript
This work develops a comprehensive ontological reconstruction of the human being based on a foundational thesis: to be is to belong. In contrast to the modern paradigm of the sovereign individual—conceived as an isolated, self-sufficient entity prior to its bonds—this work proposes an Ontological Revolution of Belonging that redefines the subject as a Self of Belonging: biologically, affectively, temporally, and institutionally bound from its origin. The Philosophy of Belonging (PB) articulates this turn through a coherent theoretical architecture that integrates ontology, (...)

  23. The Philosophy of Belonging Stratified Reality, Dual Temporality and the Scientific Reconfiguration of Contemporary Philosophy.Carlos Federico Obregon Diaz - manuscript
The Philosophy of Belonging: Stratified Reality, Dual Temporality, and the Scientific Reconfiguration of Contemporary Philosophy develops a scientifically grounded ontological framework designed to reconfigure contemporary philosophical discourse across analytic metaphysics, critical theory, liberal political philosophy, social ontology, post-structuralism, speculative realism, and existential phenomenology. The book introduces a tripartite stratified ontology—SDBO (material), SDBEO (evolutionary-biological), and SDBEIO (institutional-human)—derived from contemporary scientific knowledge rather than from aprioristic metaphysical premises. Across all strata operates dual temporality: synchronic relational structure (Tˢ) and diachronic irreversible unfolding (Tᵈ). (...)

Most theories of slurs fall into one of two families: those which understand slurring terms to involve special descriptive/informational content (however conveyed), and those which understand them to encode special emotive/expressive content. Our view is that both offer essential insights, but that part of what sets slurs apart is use-theoretic content. In particular, we urge that slurring words belong at the intersection of a number of categories in a sociolinguistic register taxonomy, one that usually includes [+slang] and [+vulgar] and always (...)

Companies’ day-to-day operations often require them to address ethical dilemmas and make ethical decisions. The corporate scandals that we have witnessed in recent decades evidence the failure to deal effectively with these situations and with the associated financial losses, reputation damage, and generation of a climate of distrust.Despite the attempts of regulatory reforms proposed in the wake of these scandals, these reforms are shown to be insufficient, making it necessary to reinforce an ethical culture inside organizations. What does woman mean? According to two competing views, it can be seen as a sex term or as a gender term. Recently, Jennifer Saul has put forward a contextualist view, according to which woman can have different meanings in different contexts. The main motivation for this view seems to involve moral and political considerations, namely, that this view can do justice to the claims of trans women. Unfortunately, Saul argues, on further reflection the contextualist view fails to do justice (...)
